On the morning of Monday, April 6, Marist band students arrived at school with bags and suitcases, prepared for an over 20 hour long bus ride to Florida.
Each year, the band travels to a different location during spring break. This year, they went to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, where they visit about every four years.
Throughout the next five days in Orlando, band students not only got the chance to explore various Disney locations such as Hollywood Studios, Epcot, and Magic Kingdom, but got the opportunity to showcase their musical talent in front of a new audience of people.
“It’s a good way to showcase the band out in the world, and public,” said Band Director Andrew Creagh. “Since we don’t compete or anything, doing this is our big thing that we do here.”
That Tuesday, the band arrived at Hollywood Studios, and spent the majority of the day there. The next day, before heading to Epcot, they had the opportunity to play and record music with a specialist at Disney’s Imagination Campus, where they were handed new sheet music to sight read and play with minimal practice beforehand.
The next day, the band performed several songs set to be played at their upcoming spring concert at the Disney Springs outdoor mall, and later took the ferry across the Seven Seas Lagoon to Magic Kingdom.
Friday was spent at Universal Orlando, Saturday at Epic Universe, and soon enough, the band was ready to return home and resume school after the event-filled week.
“I really look forward to traveling again in the future with the band,” said freshman student Jane Hornung. “Especially going to Europe next year, that’s something big to look forward to.”
