Almost everyone has done poorly on a test before, and every single time they regret not studying prior to testing day. At Marist, students live in a constant cycle of studying, quizzes, studying some more, and tests. It’s safe to say that testing is something that will always be here until the end of time, so why not master the art of studying to do well on tests?
Everyone knows about the classic study guide and flashcard combination, but are there more effective methods? The answer is yes, the purpose of studying isn’t just about memorization but understanding the material.
By using notes taken in class or previous assignments, create practice questions that help with comprehension. Practice problems are definitely a more realistic and effective way of studying. Grab a friend who is taking the same test, and study together by quizzing each other out of nowhere. Don’t just study familiar material that is easy to understand, target weak spots. When struggling with a certain unit or topic, go to Marist’s tutoring after school for extra help.
”Make sure you go over study guides, anything the teacher has told you that is specific to the unit, and to make sure you ask questions before you start studying, in case you need clarification,” says biology teacher Joanna Stemen.
When it comes to studying, location matters. The human body will get easily distracted when laying in a comfortable bed or surrounded by distractions. To best avoid that from happening, try to study in a more stable environment such as a coffee shop, the arc, or even a desk at home but a bed is not the best choice when it comes to studying.
“I have a desk in my room where I like to study at…I’ll put on a study playlist and just lock in,” says freshman Emma Froylen.
The hardest part of studying is not about memorizing or understanding, but finding discipline. To make the study session more rewarding, set up clear and achievable goals. Once these goals have become achieved, get a fun snack or go out with friends as a reward. Study for 25 minutes, and most importantly, take a five-minute break to avoid burnout.
It’s important to not stay up late scrolling on TikTok or watching a crush’s Snapchat stories the night before a test. Make sure to come to school with a full 8 hours of sleep, a positive mindset, and a full bottle of water. Positive vibes are a necessity for a good day and on the morning of the test, read affirmations on the way to school. Before school, eat a healthy breakfast like pancakes or a bowl of fruit to stimulate the brain.
