Rehearsals are underway as the Marist Theatre Guild prepares to perform the classic tale, Little Women this Fall. The show will be performed from November 6-9 in the RedHawk Theatre.
Little Women, originally written by Louisa May Alcott, follows the March sisters: Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth. Alike in many ways, each sister dreams of their own future, while also battling the societal norms of the 19th-century.
“It’s an amazing show,” said junior Erin Trapani (Amy March).
Several side plots and characters will intertwine causing problems, unification, and creating an unforgettable story.
“There’s so many things going on in this story,” said senior Carly Fox (Marmie). “It’s very intriguing to see how it all plays out.”
“Great story of female empowerment,” said Director Mrs. Erin Vail. “It’s a really universal story…teens, adults, little kids, and old people…anyone will get a lot of joy from it.”
When deciding the show directors, Vail and Mrs. Erin Kelly really wanted to highlight the talent Marist has within its students.
“We have a lot of strong, talented bunch of females,” said Vail. “Everyone is so good…there’s so many people to choose from.”
On release of the cast list, students felt a whirlwind of excitement and gratitude.
“I literally jumped up and down, and screamed at the top of my lungs,” said junior Aliyah Glass (Meg March)
“I was very excited…I’ve never been in a play before,” said Sophomore Lorenzo Kelly (Laurie). “This is a new experience.”
“I cried. I went and found my best friend,” said junior Carmen Areli Houppert. “[Her] favorite character in Little Women is Beth, so she was happy for me too.”
Senior Grace O’Malley will star in her final Marist play this Fall and will portray the leading role: Jo March.
“I’ve never played a lead in a play before,” said O’Malley. “I love to write and Jo is a writer…She’s ambitious…As a young woman she’s very relatable today.”
Marist students meet after school Monday-Thursday working on movement, lines, and character development till late hours of the day.
“We have so much fun during rehearsal,” said Trapani.
“We’re one, big, theatre family,” said Fox.
The cast is hoping the Marist community will take the time to support their school, their classmates, and have a good night of theatre.
“You know the people in it,” said Kelly. “Come see it.”
Performances are at 7 p.m. on November 6-8 with an additional matinee performance at 2 p.m. on November 9. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults. They will be available at the door, cash only.
