On Thursday mornings in the tribute room, all students are welcome to a bible study to discuss scripture. The goal is to share ideas about scripture, grow in faith, and meet new people.
“I wanted to provide students with more opportunities to just read God’s words,” says Campus Minister Zachary Maslanka.
Maslanka has experience attending his own bible study at his church and wanted to offer the same to students.
“On Thursday mornings before the Marist bible study, I attend a bible study with my church,” he says “ It’s really nice to have a group of guys together just to go through it, dissect it, discuss it, just figure out what it is saying, and how it applies to our life, so I wanted to provide students with that same thing,” says Maslanka.
Students are given materials and then talk about the scripture stories shared among each other.
“I provide the materials for it but typically what happens is I just sit back and watch the students discuss. I get insights from them and I get to learn a lot,” says Maslanka.
“I really like the group that attends it. It really helps me grow my faith and my relationship closer to God,” says Ellie Holmstrom.
For many, bible study has also helped them grow closer to others.
“Bible study has helped me meet other people and helped me even meet Coach Mas, who I have a great relationship with now. I think it is a great way to make new friends,” says Acillies Anderson.
“It seems that students learn a lot but also they get an opportunity to reflect on areas in life that they need to grow in their faith and then have a community with bible study. They can do that together,” says Maslanka.
Hearing others’ perspectives can be beneficial.
“I really like hearing other people’s ideas about scripture. I have one idea but hearing other people’s views on it opens my eyes to what else there is and how broad scripture is and everyone’s different opinions on it,” says Holmstrom.
Having a late start on Thursday mornings allows people to get a head start on their day by connecting with Jesus.
“It is a great way to start my Thursday, it kinda kicks off getting me ready for my day and it is a nice thing to start my schedule,” says Anderson.
