Women Empowerment Club is a group of Marist women who work hard to uplift, empower, and celebrate other women.
It started a couple years ago by a junior. She wanted to create a club that would celebrate women in Marist, our community, and around the world,” says Club Moderator Tracy Amato.
The club’s goal is to help women by supporting them. They believe that part of being a woman is going through certain hardships, so they spread awareness about these topics.
“I think it’s important to talk about issues involving women because there’s a lot of hardships women face especially with what we are working on this month, with domestic violence awareness,” says club member Abby Brouwer.
The club uses posters around Marist as a way to spread their message about empowering women.
“We make posters and try to spread anything related to women, like domestic violence awareness or relationship struggles,” says Brouwer.
Women Empowerment club also uses help from outside of school to raise awareness about certain topics.
“A lot of the resources are people that we know or organizations that the members have previously volunteered in on their own and then they thought it would be great to bring them into our community here,” says Amato.
On February 25, a speaker from an organization called Wings: A New Direction visited the club to talk about teen dating violence, and on February 27 and 28, the club did a bake sale to raise funds for the group which helps women suffering from domestic violence.
“When we raise this money for the victims of domestic violence, we turn it into gift cards that they will give to the survivors for either groceries or just necessities to start their new lives on the right track,” said Amato.
Although they mainly help women, their help extends to all people in need. The club does service projects to help the community and others who are going through a hard time.
“We have sent greeting cards to women in nursing homes who do not have family and we have also made blankets for babies in hospitals and for children dealing with cancer or terminal illness,” said Amato.
Women Empowerment Club is a safe learning environment for women, also focusing on topics like breast cancer awareness and safety on college campuses.
“It is a place for women to get together to celebrate and help each other,” said Amato.
