MHS Media shows rising success winning a record nine awards at the Scholastic Press Association of Chicago (SPAC) conference at Northwestern University’s Medill Chicago campus on March 20.
The day began with options for students to choose among nine sessions focused on journalism skills and real world applications. Students attended seminars covering careers in journalism, ethical decision-making in reporting, protest journalism, and how to get jobs in the industry. These sessions gave students a deeper understanding of what it takes to succeed in journalism beyond high school.
Following the workshops, students gathered for the SPAC awards where MHS Media earned recognition across multiple categories. The staff received Excellence in Overall Website, highlighting the strength of the entire program. Individual awards include:
-News Story Nicholas Larson, “Bell System Breaks, Marist Keeps Ticking”
-Feature Carsyn Smith, “AI in Schools: Friend or Foe?”
-Staff Editorial Brendan Bjork, “This Planet’s Only Hope”
-Opinion Piece Kevin Curley, “Fall Has Got it All”
-Sports Feature George Kottaras, “Basketball Mastermind, Loving Dog Dad”
-Sports Photo Abby Parker “Marist Girls Wrestling Takedown”
-Special Coverage Ava Krueger, Nicholas Larson, George Kottaras, Michaela Vitaliano “Hidden Stress on Students”
-Broadcast Feature – Pat and Vinny “Pat Coogan, Always a RedHawk”
Two projects earned superior distinction, one of the highest honors given: Special Coverage “Hidden Stress on Students” and the broadcast feature, “Pat Coogan, Always a RedHawk.”
“I think it was awesome. I didn’t think we would win so much. Honestly it was inspiring,” said Kevin Curley.
For many students, the sessions stood out as the most impactful part of the day, offering insight beyond a typical classroom setting.
“The sessions were a cool experience and gave me some real world applications beyond what I can learn in the classroom,” said Larson.
The combination of professional insight and award recognition made the SPAC trip a memorable experience for MHS Media. As students returned from downtown Chicago, they brought back not only awards but a greater motivation to continue telling meaningful stories.
