For the first time in Marist history, the boys varsity basketball team has secured a state championship title. They crushed Benet Academy Saturday, March 14, at the University of Illinois in a stunning 44-28 victory.
Benet is ranked ninth in the nation and went into the matchup having lost only one game the entire season. Despite a weaker record, and trailing in the first quarter, the RedHawks dominated the floor for the remaining three quarters of the game.
Fans in the student section of the arena were bursting with excitement as victory became apparent.
The team and their parents celebrated around midnight in the school cafeteria after the long, but spirited, bus ride back to Mount Greenwood.
The band led the champs in a parade through the halls after students returned to school Tuesday following a long weekend.
