Every day at Marist High School should be loud, exciting, and full of RedHawk spirit. Recently, many students have been missing out on what makes Marist special: school events. While some students do attend games and activities, a survey shows that many students aren’t interested. This must change immediately.
According to an MHS Media survey with 127 responses, 59.1% of the students said they only go to Marist events some of the time, and 13.4% said they never go, while only a small number of the respondents said they always attend.
Some students say they don’t go because they are busy, tired, their friends aren’t going, or they are simply not interested. That makes sense. Everyone has homework, jobs or other activities, but Marist events aren’t just about sports, they are about supporting classmates, building friendships, and showing school pride. When students don’t attend, they miss chances to feel more connected to their school.
Of the students who do attend events, football games are the most popular at 84.3%. Basketball and plays also had occasional strong attendance. This demonstrates that students will go to events when they feel excited and included. Imagine how the atmosphere would be if even more students showed up consistently.
Attending school events creates memories, boosts school spirit, and supports the students who participate. A louder student section can motivate athletes and performers to do their best. When students show up, it proves students care about our community.
It also helps new students feel included. For freshmen and transfer students especially, school events are an easy way to meet people and become part of the community. Sitting in the stands, cheering together, and sharing school traditions help students form connections that don’t always happen in class.
When students skip events, they miss out on chances to build friendships and feel more comfortable at school. A stronger sense of community can even lead to more school pride.
As little as once or twice each season can make a big difference. Bring a friend, and stay for a quarter. If we all show up more often, Marist will feel more united and energetic.
