Ever been bored at home, itching for something that could get your mind running? If so, art could be the perfect hobby for you. Art can be a great tool for relaxation and a creative way to have fun.
When a lot of people think of art, they immediately reject the idea of it as a hobby.
In a poll of 47 students conducted by MHS Media, 74.5% of students have tried drawing, painting, sketching, or digital art before. This is because when some people think of art, they immediately think of these four forms. They are the most popular, but they are also the kind of art that makes people give up the whole hobby the fastest.
Art is such an umbrella term, there is not one single way to do it. Lots of people give up on art because they think their skills in painting and drawing are not the best. Just because these two forms do not work out for you, does not mean others won’t.
Other great forms of art include beads, crafting, woodcarving, and sculpture. If none of these suit you, performing arts like dance or something completely different like literature, also fall under the umbrella of art.
Some people are aware of other art forms, but they find more reasons to complain.
One common complaint is that obtaining the materials is too hard, but it does not have to be this way if you don’t over complicate it. There are plenty of places you can buy materials at, like a Michaels or a Hobby Lobby. You can also find anything you would need by shopping online from places like Amazon or EBay.
The final and biggest reason I’ve heard people turn down art is because they aren’t good at it. I’ve tried to convince others that art would be a great pastime, but I always get the response, ‘I can’t draw.’
I have friends who have doubted their own skills before. They complained that art was too hard without even trying. Once I convinced them to give it a try, realization struck, ‘this actually isn’t too bad.’
In the same poll, 48.9% of students love art, and find it fun, while 31.9% of students don’t have an opinion. Lots of Marist students know this truth, which is that art isn’t as bad as some make it out to be.
Art is a learning process, nobody was good the first time they tried. The goal is to practice. Never give up, and you’ll eventually be satisfied with how your work turns out.
Once you find the right form of art for you, and if you don’t give up, the results are extremely rewarding. You’ll end up with your personal creation. Something you put your effort into, which makes it all the more special.
Next time you see a pencil, don’t ignore it. Pick it up, doodle something on a blank piece of paper. Who knows, maybe you find your newest hobby to indulge.
