Though this movie didn’t convince me that Viola (Amanda Bynes) was a man, it did convince me that she is a great actress and the movie is worth your time.
This is a goofy teen rom-com that I will always recommend. It is perfect for both boys and girls in the teenage age group, including both sports and a cheesy romance aspect.
The movie is based on the Shakespeare play, Twelfth Night, and loosely incorporates aspects from the play into the movie. For instance, the school called Illyria is the name of the country where the play takes place.
Viola is a lovable character who shows that she doesn’t let anyone stray her from her own dreams and goals, such as her mother (Julie Hagerty) who most desires her tomboy daughter to become a beautiful debutante.
Viola plays for the girls’ soccer team at Cornwall Prep. When the team gets cut she tries to go out for the boys’ team but doesn’t get taken seriously.
She expects some support from her boyfriend Justin Drayton (Robert Hoffman), but when he does the opposite it fuels her even more to prove her worth.
Conveniently, her twin brother Sebastian Hastings (James Kirk) who is supposed to be attending Illyria, is ditching two weeks of school to pursue his dreams as a musician in England.
Viola gets the idea to pretend to be her brother and attend Illyria and join the boys’ soccer team to show she deserves a spot on the team just as much as any guy.
The movie includes great scenery, considering it was made in the early 2000’s. It gives viewers a nostalgic and authentic perspective, such as the carnival scene with the kissing booth and the old fashioned carnival tents.
While attending Illyria she becomes good friends with her roommate Duke Orsino (Channing Tatum), and gets insight on a guy’s true thoughts.
What Viola is not expecting is a problematic love triangle.
I first watched this movie my freshman year and now as a junior it is still a movie that is a great watch and never fails to make me laugh whether I’m alone at home or at sleepover with my friends.
I watched this movie on Prime Video but it is also currently available on Hulu, Disney plus, Apple TV, YouTube, and Fandango.
Overall, if you are ever looking for a good movie to watch with your friends, family, or just by yourself I would definitely consider She’s the Man, for your next pick. This movie gets 5 out of 5 RedHawks from me.
