The Greatest Showman is an unforgettable movie that retains its charm no matter how many times you watch it.
The movie was released in 2017 and is streaming on Disney+. The Greatest Showman is a musical, so if you are not a fan of that genre then this movie is not for you. The main message of the film is that all humans, including the outcasts, are equal.
The movie takes place in 19th-century Manhattan and is loosely based on the true story of P. T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman) and his unconventional, yet fascinating, decisions on how to run a circus.
He recruits people deemed as freaks, such as trapeze artist Anne Wheeler (Zendaya), to star in his shows. The movie explores how power and fame can get to a person’s head and how, as Barnum’s wife Charity (Michelle Williams) says, “You don’t need everyone to love you, just a few good people.”
Jackman puts on the performance of a lifetime. He is known to star as serious, strong characters such as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this movie proves that Jackman has the ability to play various roles with ease. He also shows off his theatre background through his singing which is a spectacle to witness. Along with Jackman, Zac Efron stars as Phillip Carlyle, Barnum’s apprentice.
Carlyle and Barnum are a joy to watch on the big screen. Whatever one lacks, the other makes up which causes the duo to captivate the audience’s attention.
The movie truly dazzles when it comes to the soundtrack. The Greatest Showman is the origin of many popular songs such as Rewrite the Stars, This is Me, and A Million Dreams. The choreography is breathtaking and the first three minutes of the movie immediately astonish the watcher with delight and wonder.
I first watched the movie when I was eight years old and it is now dubbed my favorite movie of all time. Every year my family and I watch The Greatest Showman for my birthday and this is a tradition I plan to continue for many years to come. In fact, The Greatest Showman was the theme for my ninth birthday. This displays how close I hold this magical movie to my heart.
I can never get sick of watching this movie. Every song still gives me goosebumps because of the raw emotion it contains and the chemistry between the characters is a joy to watch.
Though the pacing of the movie can be overwhelming at times, The Greatest Showman entrances the viewer from start to finish. I rate this movie 5 Redhawks on a scale of 1-5. It is a sensational film and its message about equality and finding the right people still holds up today.
