Let me start this off by saying that I am one of the biggest Taylor Swift fans of all time. I have looked up to her since before I could remember and love her music. I know every song by heart and every meaning behind them.
On October 3, she released her 12th album called The Life of a Showgirl. There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the quality of her latest songs. I believe that it is a good album, although not the best she has made.
I think that all the songs are good, but my favorite ones were definitely The Fate of Ophelia, Opalite, Father Figure, Actually Romantic, and The Life of a Showgirl featuring Sabrina Carpenter. I like these songs because they are upbeat and I feel like I could dance to them.
The Fate of Ophelia has very poetic lyrics, but a fun beat. This song really incorporates Swift’s wide vocabulary and how she uses a play on words.
Opalite has simpler lyrics than The Fate of Ophelia but has the same fun vibe to it.
Along with the other songs, Father Figure and Actually Romantic tell a story. Father Figure is about power and betrayal. It is rumored to be about Scott Borchetta, which later leads to her masters being sold to Scooter Braun and her having to fight to get her masters back. They were sold to Braun without her permission and she has been trying to get them back since she was 14.
Actually Romantic is believed to be a response to Charli XCX’s song Sympathy Is a Knife. Charli XCX and Swift were friends until Charli XCX released that song, which was about Swift. In Actually Romantic she says that the drama is one-sided.
The Life of a Showgirl featuring Sabrina Carpenter explains that being a performer and public figure is not always as glamorous as it might seem. Being a showgirl can be hard and takes a toll on your mental and physical health, but Swift believes you have to preserve.
The songs that I think are good but not my favorite are Elizabeth Taylor, Eldest Daughter, Ruin The Friendship, Wi$h Li$t, Wood, CANCELLED!, and Honey.
These are the songs that did not stand out to me. They are all slower songs which I do like, but I feel like it just did not fit the pop aesthetic of this album.
Overall, I think this was a great album. It showed the side of Swift that you do not usually see, revealing how she feels about her relationship with Travis Kelce, drama, and family history.
I love this album and I am very happy that she decided to release it.
Ona scale of 1-5, I would give The Life of a Showgirl 5 RedHawks.
