Marist students are often in the building when no classes are underway. The new dean is clarifying rules this year concerning where they are allowed, and not allowed, to be before school, during lunch, and after school.
BEFORE SCHOOL
Students are encouraged to hang out in the cafeteria if they arrive well before the start of period 1.
“I sit with my friends before school in the cafeteria and will sometimes even get breakfast before class begins,” said junior Kailynn Solis.
The Arc is also available for students, providing a quiet place to get work done.
“Whenever I have homework to do in the morning, I will head over to the Arc to do it and sometimes I print out papers I need for class,” said Solis.
“Students are technically allowed to come in the Arc at 7:30 a.m. but if you get here earlier than that, I am probably here early as well, so you are welcome to come earlier,” said librarian Mrs. Kristen Rademacher.
Students are also allowed to go to teachers’ classrooms before school.
“Our students are allowed to sit in teachers’ classrooms before school around 7:30 a.m. and if there’s a written pass or email that you can show to supervising adults, then that is perfectly fine,” said Dean Daniel Higgins.
DURING LUNCH
During lunch students are supposed to remain in the cafeteria. They are also able to go to the Arc, but will need a pass to do so.
“Students just need to come and ask me in the morning, in the library, if they want a lunch pass and I just need to know their name and what period they will be coming in at. I will then sign it and write the date on it to make sure you will be able to use it for that day. It is a little yellow slip,” said Rademacher.
While it might seem like an inconvenience, passes are used to protect students.
“The whole point of the pass system is that we don’t want students just wandering around. It is about safety and security, so we know where the kids are at all times,” said Higgins.
Teachers can also provide lunch passes.
“If a teacher does write a pass or email for a student to meet them for extra help or something else, that is perfectly acceptable,” said Higgins.
AFTER SCHOOL
Students have just a couple options of where to hang out after the last bell rings at 2:42 p.m. The Arc is one option.
“Most days it closes at 4 p.m. and very occasionally it will close earlier than that due to some event we will have in the building,” said Rademacher.
Students can also sit in the cafeteria after school.
“The cafeteria stays open until 4 p.m. and some days it will stay open later with supervision if there are games or other events,” said Higgins.
Students are no longer allowed to sit in the science wing common area after school.
“Because there is no supervision. Our number one responsibility at school is safety and we just do not have people who can be fully geared towards supervising that area. It stinks, it’s a cool spot, but there is just no one to watch it,” said Higgins.
