Marist High School students will elect their student council members Monday, September 8 after the announcements during period 2. Each grade level will vote separately for the members to represent their class on the student council.
When the students are gathered for Mass Wednesday, candidates for president of student council will be announced and they will present their campaign speeches to the entire school.
Despite the late election cycle, new moderators Mrs. Colleen Phelan and Coach Rob Topps are trying to get more students involved and engaged in the process.
“At the first Mass, we’ll narrow down the candidates that are running for President, and the top three will make a speech,” said Coach Topps, co-moderator of the student council.
The vote for student council president will involve the entire student body to better express the views of all students. Unlike in years past, when the president of the student council was elected solely by other council members.
Additionally, candidates will no longer promote themselves on posters in the halls, but instead candidates are encouraged to take their appeals to the students directly.
“Back when I was in high school we did little buttons on cardboard and construction paper, so we want people to get out and campaign,” said Topps.
Candidates have been spotted throughout the school already campaigning to students by handing out candy.
