Coffee and energy drinks have been skyrocketing in popularity. Which one of these energizing caffeinated drinks do Marist students crave more? Both have their pros and cons.
Coffee
Coffee is a favorite drink around the world, known for its rich flavor and energy boosting effects. It fuels routines and helps get people through the day.
“I drink coffee every day after school and even sometimes before school,” said student Olivia Amelio. “I add a vanilla creamer which makes it very enjoyable.”
The effects of coffee can have a positive or negative impact on the human body. On the plus side, coffee can improve alertness and concentration. Coffee can also give your metabolism a boost.
“Coffee is the only thing that can keep me awake throughout the day,” said Amelio.
Many people rely on coffee to start their day or to stay awake during long hours of work or study. Studies suggest that moderate coffee consumption may reduce the risk of certain diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
On the negative side, coffee can discolor teeth over time and even lead to bone loss if you drink too much without enough calcium. This may affect bone health in the long run. Large amounts of caffeine also tend to cause anxiety and insomnia. Additionally, it can increase heart rate and blood pressure in some individuals, which can contribute to heart issues.
“When I have my enormous cup of coffee my heart starts to race really fast which can be because I drink it too fast but it is still concerning sometimes,” said Amelio.
Energy drinks
Energy drinks have become extremely popular, especially among teens and young adults. They’re marketed as a fast way to increase energy.
“I prefer energy drinks because the flavor is fruity and tastier, unlike coffee where it is bitter and leaves a gross taste in your mouth,” said student Rita Loureiro.
In terms of effectiveness, energy drinks provide a short-term energy boost. It temporarily enhances reaction time and endurance. Some studies suggest that energy drinks can improve athletic performance and alertness when consumed in moderate amounts.
“Energy drinks make me feel way more energized than coffee and I think it is because they are loaded with tons of sugar,” said Loureiro.
The caffeine and sugar in energy drinks can temporarily elevate mood and reduce the feeling of tiredness. This can be helpful in social settings or during moments of low motivation.
On the other hand, energy drinks have numerous issues. Many energy drinks are loaded with sugar leading to weight gain, dental problems, and increased risk of diabetes. Similar to coffee, the large consumption of caffeine can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems, sleep disorders, and anxiety.
“When I drink energy drinks my hands tend to shake and even my legs if I drink over three cans within a day but usually it fades away after an hour or two,” said Loureiro.
