Gold versus silver jewelry is a popular battle that has been circulating around social media for quite some time now. Marist students also partake in this ongoing rivalry.
Students have many different opinions, not based on the look of the jewelry, but based on which matches their style and complexion better. Gold jewelry typically matches better with warmer skin tones, with olive undertones. Silver jewelry is often more flattering on cooler skin tones with pink or blue undertones.
“I think silver kind of matches with everything and, like, with gold, you kind of have to wear certain colors in order for it to look really good,” said freshman Zoe Norris. “Typically, you have to wear brighter colors with gold jewelry.”
“I prefer gold because I feel like silver jewelry makes me look more pale and I am already really pale,” said freshman Madelyn Tracy. “Gold tends to blend with my coloring better, and it gives me a bit of a tanned effect.”
The seasons of the year also play a role in which color accessories students will choose.
“I think it just depends on the season because, like, for summer, I feel like gold is more attracted to the sun,” said freshman Rita Loureiro. “And for winter, I feel like snow matches with the silver.”
“I tend to wear silver during the winter because I think it matches the season better and I wear gold in the summer because I think it looks better when you have a tan,” said Norris.
In some circumstances, students like the idea of wearing both gold and silver jewelry at the same time.
“I like both together, and I think that it can look really good if you style it correctly,” said Loureiro. “But I do prefer just having a singular color of jewelry on because I think it looks classier.”
“Sometimes it can look okay, but it really depends on how you style it. Most of the time when I see people wearing both, it just does not look right, in my opinion,” said Tracy.
Another question to debate: which is easier to maintain?
”I think that silver is easier to maintain because gold tarnishes if it’s fake or if it is really cheap. Silver still can rust and get old too, but not as quickly as gold does,” said Norris.
For some, that is not an issue.
“I don’t maintain my jewelry, that sounds like something only old people do,” said Loureiro.
Differences aside, it seems both silver and gold will not be going out of style any time soon.
“I wear jewelry, like, all the time. I’ve been trying this new thing where I try to wear a different piece of jewelry every day,” said Loureiro. “Even though I wear a new piece everyday, I do still have a few signature necklaces or rings that I need to have on at all times.”
