The Marist boys and girls lacrosse teams are off and running, each showcasing early potential and a hunger to improve as they navigate their spring schedules.
Boys Lacrosse
The boys started off the season on April 3, heading on the road to face Carmel High School. Marist started off the game hot, and never let off the brakes as they ended up winning 14-7.
The RedHawks would then be back to play their home opener on April 5, facing off against a tough opponent in St. Ignatius college prep, who are currently ranked number six in Illinois. Marist ended up falling to the Wolfpack, losing 17-6.
The RedHawks are looking to improve on their weak spots early in the season in order to prepare for the season ahead.
“The team can improve on composure and patience. Having the ball is the most important factor of winning and being vocal on defense,” said junior defenseman Brandon Hoff.
“We need to work on communication in order to for the team to improve from last years,” said junior midfielder Aidan McDonnell.
The RedHawks finished last season with a winning record of 13-7 and ended up ranked #15 in the state. With graduating seniors and players being called up to varsity, it’s important the team finds connections and build on them.
“Every year is a different team, some stay and some leave but this changes the bond between everyone. I feel this year we have a close connection and play very well together because of this,” said Hoff.
One of the most important factors in improving the team is having senior players be able to step up with the experience that they have.
“The seniors have one of, if not THE most impact on the team and all of the players. Young players look up to them because of their skill and amount of time with the team,” said Hoff.
Girls Lacrosse
The girls team started their season about two weeks before the boys team on March 20, facing Lockport. The RedHawks lost 12-8.
However since then, the team has put their foot on the gas and hasn’t looked back. They followed up the loss with a dominant win over Neuqua Valley, 17-5.
Since the opening loss, Marist has won every game, with a record of 6-1 as of April 10. In those six games, Marist has outscored their opponents a staggering 61-23. The teams scoring has been lead by Seniors Megan Hansen and Chloe Mlyniec, who each have scored 22 points.
It looks to be a bright season ahead for both teams.
