Marist Yearbook Club has been going through the motions to create the 2024-2025 year book. The members have been doing various tasks throughout the school year in order to complete the book on time.
The club first has a meeting at the beginning of the year to discuss what the yearbook will consist of.
“It starts off with a theme. I have had kids put all their ideas on a google slide and from there we vote on it, then the officers and I decide on the final theme,” says Ms. Rita Hoffmann, moderator of Yearbook Club.
They decide a theme to use that is relevant to the student body this year.
“This year’s theme is music, which is quite popular right now with teenagers,” says Hoffmann.
The club has requirements they have to meet in order to make the yearbook.
“It is a 200 page book. We incorporate all of our clubs into the book to show what activities we have here at Marist and we also obviously include athletics as well,” says Hoffmann.
A way they gather this content to include in the yearbook is by interviewing people and collaborating with another class.
“We use Ms. Carlson’s MHS Media [club] to help and we collaborate with them to get the journalism aspect of it and then we also have a lot of photographers as well. Some students are designers, and some are photographers specifically. We also interview teachers, students, athletes, and search social media for content,” says Hoffmann.
Another thing they have to include in the yearbook is student portraits to show all of the Marist students.
“Most importantly, we include student portraits of the ninth, tenth, eleventh graders, and for the twelfth graders, there is a big showcase for them. This showcase includes pictures of big events such as graduation and prom and all those fun things,” says Hoffmann.
The yearbook club is able to create the yearbook through the members of the club. Each member has their own unique job that they do to create the yearbook.
“There are a lot of different areas for kids to contribute so that they can be part of making the yearbook,” says Hoffmann.
One job includes graphic design, where the members work to make the design look just right.
“It’s a lot of taking pictures at all the events, going through the photos and editing the photos. Then going on the pages, putting the pages in, designing them from scratch, and making sure they look right for the yearbook,” says Jessica Ekhart, Chief Editor of Yearbook Club.
In order to put all of the content and design together, they use a yearbook company named Jostens.
“They have a program called Yearbook Avenue. It is an online design program and is user friendly. We come up with fonts, colors, and templates that the kids use to help create unity amongst all of those pages. It is similar to other design programs such as Photoshop or Canva,” says Hoffmann.
Members of the club enjoy putting the yearbook together.
“I just think the yearbook club is so much fun,” says Hannah Sutker, Chief Editor of the Yearbook Club.
