Three Marist girls on the wrestling team qualified for the 2025 state championship February 28-March 1 at Grossinger Motors Arena, in Bloomington. While they didn’t place, they came home more determined for next season.
“State was super fun to be at and I was really excited of how far me and my team were able to get this year,” says wrestler Izzy Locastio.
Locastio, along with wrestler Sam Fontaine, both juniors, and sophomore Abby Parker all qualified for state after placing top at sectionals.
“The lead up from sectionals felt really strong even though I was stressed about state,” says Locastio.
The IHSA State Championship hosted more than 200 girls who all made 4th and up at sectionals.
“State felt so exciting because I was able to be there with my teammates Abby and Sam and the road to get there was so worth it,” said Locastio.
All three girls have been wrestling for less than two years and this was their first time qualifying for state.
“We all have put so much effort into our practices and previous meets to become better athletes and wrestlers,” says Locastio.
While state was a lot of pressure, the girls had their teammates and coaches to support them.
“I’m insanely proud of my teammates. Each of us put our blood, sweat, and tears into every practice and match, so it was rewarding to watch us go down the state and put up a strong fight,” says Abby Parker. “Each of us put our all on the line and I’m so proud of how we did.
They return in the wake of a successful season, filled with big aspirations for next year.
“I personally fought hard. It didn’t go exactly as planned and I definitely have room to improve, but I’m proud of my performance and I worked hard to get there,” says Parker.
The team hopes to bring more girls to state next season.
“My goal for next season is to keep working hard and be able to place next year. It was a dream come true to get down to state, but next season I want to work even harder to come home with a medal,” said Parker. “I can’t wait to become a more advanced wrestler and put everything out there once again.”
