The new Learning Life Skills Club teaches students how to do many things they may need in their daily lives but wouldn’t have a chance to learn otherwise, such as sewing and ironing.
“This club lets students prepare for anything life might throw their way. The reason it is important is in the name of the club, we’re learning to be successful in life as young adults,” said Club Moderator Mr. Pat Meyer. “We focus on learning important life lessons that are not taught in the traditional classroom space.”
Meyer was prompted to get involved to teach students things that he’s learned throughout his life.
“These students have a drive and passion to learn essential life lessons and I want to see them learn these lessons,” said Meyer.
Meyer believes that students should get the chance to learn these life skills, because they might not be able to at home or anywhere else.
Along the way, he is learning too.
“I don’t think students necessarily know less life skills, just different life skills than other generations. This generation has so many life skills that I don’t have. They are teaching me so much along the way while I teach them. We are all learning and growing together,” he said.
Students in the club learn how to use these skills physically during meetings, by having the club leaders show them examples of what they’re supposed to be doing, and then the students proceed to copy them.
“I think it’s fun to learn things we’ve never learned before. I learned how to iron and we’re also learning how to sew,” said Maggie Dignan, a sophomore in the club.
Members say this club will help them in the future.
“I do recommend this club because you get to learn skills that are used in everyday life,” said Dignan.
“We get to learn to do a lot of different things, like things we’ve never learned how to do before,” said sophomore Michael Cushing.
Students who are interested are welcome to meet after school Mondays in room 225. Students can also join the club’s Canvas page to see any updates.
