Two Marist seniors became state champions over the weekend, competing in the ISHA Wrestling Tournament at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign. Will Denny and Ricky Ericksen each placed first in their individual competitions, winning in their respective weight class.

Denny won his second championship defending his previous title. For Ericksen, it was his first state title alongside his friend and teammate, Will. 

“It felt awesome he has deserved it this whole year and it was fun to see him close out,” said Denny. 

Alongside the two first-place champions, seniors George Marinopoulos and Michael Esteban gained the title State Runner-up in their weight classes.

Senior Donovan Allen was awarded All State after his match on Friday. 

The achievements may not be over yet. Fourteen of Marist’s wrestlers will compete  for the Team State Champion title this weekend at Illinois State University in Bloomington. 

“We all build each other, hold each other accountable in every aspect, not just wrestling, because we are always with each other,” said Denny.
