Marist Celebrates Martin Luther King Day

The Marist community will be celebrating and encouraging students to attend various service events off-campus to mark Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 20.

Off-campus events will include: A city-wide senior meal delivery event at the Washington Park Field House; the 40th annual Aurora MLK ceremony with keynote speaker, Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, at East Aurora High School; and MLK Jr. Day service opportunities at the River Trail Nature Center.

“We all need to continue to engage in community service as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was involved in service. There is always someone else to help and in worse situations,” said Ms. LaToya Hayes, Director of Equity and Belonging.

Marist High School has also stressed the importance of attending these events to build a more inclusive environment.

“We need to make sure we stay committed to building a community where all students and faculty feel a sense of belonging and where everyone is celebrated,” said Hayes.

I am a junior at Marist High School and taking my second year of journalism. When I’m not doing my four hours of homework, I enjoy golfing, cooking, reading, and working out. At Marist, I am a student ambassador, play for the Golf Team, member of many clubs, and president of the new Amnesty International chapter at Marist. I look forward this year to meeting new people, driving to school, and having fun in my journalism class!

I am a junior here at Marist. I am in my 2nd year of journalism and media. In my spare time I like hanging out with my friends and family. At Marist I try to stay very involved. I run cross country and track, and do various clubs including MHS Media Club. I can't wait to see what this year has in store!!!

Aliyah Glass, Journalism and Media 2 Writer

I am a sophomore here at Marist. I love to journal about my life and sing, either at church or in theater. They've been a recent hobby of mine. I love all animals. They mean so much to me. My favorite book is “The Perks of Being a Wallflower.” A hero I look up to is probably Lana Del Ray. She's my favorite music artist. She never fails to amaze me with her lyrics and music. One of my favorite movies is “Alice in Wonderland,” but I love all versions of the story. Alice is my favorite fictional character. I once played her in my school play in second grade and would love to play her once again.
