Marist girls wrestling took 4th place overall in their first tournament of the season Saturday, November 30 at Antioch High School.
“The lead up to the tournament was really fun, as it was our first wrestling matches for the year,” said junior Isabelle Locacio.
A total of 26 other teams participated.
“I am really excited for what the team can prove this year,” said junior Sarah Parker.
The team left Marist for Antioch at 8:30 a.m. This was a full day event with multiple matches per wrestler. The team consists of mostly girls who are new to the wrestling team.
“I was excited to see how practice would pay off for everyone in the tournament and during their matches,” said Parker.
The day started off with much anticipation, but later moved into excitement as the team supported each other through each match.
“It was so exciting seeing the team being able to get far especially the freshman getting to experience what an actual wrestling tournament was like,” said Locastio.
The tournament was also successful in proving how far previous wrestlers had grown from last year as most of them earned medals.
“For the returning girls you could see any work that they did over the summer plus the experience from the previous year and how that made them stand out more,” said Parker.
The day was hectic as there were only 12 mats set up with matches happening all at once with different weight classes for each wrestler. There were lots of teams and coaches running around to be there for their wrestlers.
“It was fun cheering on the team as almost everyone had a chance to wrestle and got to experience what it was like being a part of that and supporting the team,” said sophomore Abby Parker.
The Marist coaches reminded the team to focus on the basics and the skills they need to win their matches. This would lead to great success as Marist would continue to climb toward the top of the tournament bracket.
By the end of the day, Marist had scored 4th place overall with 5 girls scoring medals for their respective weight classes.
“We were both really proud of our team even with the losses as it proved how much we have progressed since practice started,” said Locastio
