It’s that time of the year when the Broadcasting Club produces the Christmas episode for their YouTube show, MHS Studio Magazine. They filmed it on Thursday, December 5th after school in the broadcasting studio.
“It’s fun, I feel like it puts everyone in a good mood and we start thinking about the holidays. It encourages all of us to get a little bit more into the Christmas spirit,” says Club Moderator Ms. Carlson.
There are a few segments in the Christmas special that include various topics such as sports, how to wrap presents, an interview segment, and banter with the hosts.
“My favorite part is the ‘Tip of the Day’ [segment] with the wrapping paper. I feel like that will be fun to watch,” says Molly Haynes, who hosted the show.
To prepare for the recording, they set up lights, microphones, and teleprompters to ensure everyone has what they need to succeed.
“We have a teleprompter to read our lines, but we also just go with the flow,” says Haynes.
First, they filmed everyone sharing their favorite and least favorite Christmas movies. Then, they started with the sports segment. Two students talked about sports at Marist and in Chicago, and then they taped their next segment on how to wrap presents.
“I think the creativity that’s put into it and how we get to express our minds is definitely my favorite part of the Christmas special and just broadcasting overall,” says co-host Kevin Curley.
“My favorite position is definitely hosting, I like to have an on-camera role rather than behind the scenes,” says Haynes.
Carlson answers questions and then returns to behind the camera to continue filming.
“We have a talented group of students who produce a show for YouTube every other week. It’s a variety show and includes talk show segments, a sport segment and special features each week,” says Carlson.
After the interview, the hosts will film all the openers for the segments. They give a preview on what the segment will be about.
“We have a couple of hosts and they chit chat about what’s going on,” says Carlson.
After filming all the segments, Carlson edited them together to make a 20-30 minute show.
“We produce and film multiple segments and then afterward my job as the moderator is that I just put the segments all together. The students have done the brunt of the work because they have produced all these individual segments,” says Carlson.
Marist broadcasting students enjoy filming and putting together shows, especially this one.
“My favorite video to film is our Christmas special. I feel like I do well with hosting it and it will always be my favorite. It is about what to do to prepare for Christmas and fun things involving the holidays, so it makes me happy and I enjoy it a lot,” says Haynes.
