Marist students have a lot of weight on their shoulders from the pressure of academics, personal problems, and extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs. Students usually don’t have enough time to complete assignments or study because of their constant busy days. Because of these things, most students need a place where they can focus on their work, and catch up on things they have missed in their classes.
Many Marist students believe that having a study hall is a great solution allowing them to achieve mental clarity and have time to focus on academics.
Junior Molly Julian says, “I’m able to get all of my math homework done, which is a huge thing I tend to struggle with doing. I am also able to study, and do assignments from earlier days that I didn’t get to finish. It’s very helpful and it helps me not overwork myself in one night.”
According to a poll conducted by MHS Media, 72.9% of Marist students have said that study halls benefit them and 54.8% of those students say that their study halls benefit them a great amount, whether it be academically, mentally, or both.
Sophomore, Jaiden Burden says, “It helps me not have to do so much homework after school so I can have time for other activities. I can get enough sleep and not ruin my sleep schedule, and I get to have time to do extracurricular activities like wrestling.”
Having a study hall not only can help students who are struggling academically or mentally, but also students who don’t have enough free time due to extracurricular activities after school.
Sophomore Darren Bridges says, “Because of study hall, it has relieved me of so much homework. For instance, if someone has assignments and extracurricular activities after school, they can complete those assignments and not have to worry about them so much because of their activities.”
74.8% of Marist students polled said that they think everyone should have an automatic built-in study hall, because of how impactful they can be for students with their academic, mental, and emotional challenges.
Bridges says, “I think students should always have the choice to have a study hall as it’s a big help and it can make your nights easier.”
Julian says, “It makes it a lot easier to balance my daily life and the things I do throughout my day by improving my mental health greatly, and also helps me not stress myself out.”
The students also have freedom in study hall to listen to music while working, something that they are not always allowed to do in classes.
Bridges says, “I’ve found that I get more work done in study hall because teachers give me the freedom to choose what I want to work on, and I can even listen to music which helps me focus a lot more and makes the work easier to do.”
