The Marist’s Varsity Girls Volleyball team brought home the state champion title in the 4A division Saturday, November 17 at Illinois State University.
The team advanced to the semi finals after beating Mother McAuley last Wednesday.
Friday, they played in the semi finals at Illinois State and won. The following day they played in the championship game against Benet Academy. They lost the first set, but made a comeback in the last two.
“I think after the first set it definitely scared me a bit, but then at the end of the day it’s not over until it’s over. We still had a chance and might as well take it,” said player Elise Bocanegra.
The game was an exciting watch for students, parents, and faculty. Many students showed up to cheer on their fellow classmates.
“I think that both teams worked very hard to achieve their goals, and they got the dub,” says Jacob Finley, who is a part of the men’s volleyball team.
They wrapped up their season with 32 wins and 9 losses.
Last spring, the boys varsity volleyball team also won the state championship, which makes this the first time both teams won state in the same year.
“It definitely was a hard game but my team and I pushed through and we fought to win,” said player Elayna Davidson.
