Marist High School’s Broadcasting Club recorded an entertaining episode of their variety-style talk show, MHS Studio Magazine, October 17, to help get viewers into the spirit of the Halloween season.
The club tapes the show after school every other Thursday in the MHS studio. Kevin Curley, a sophomore and officer of the Broadcasting Club, regularly participates in multiple on-air segments and to helps out with filming.
“I like helping out in any way,” Curley said.
The Broadcasting Club has a variety of roles available when they record, appealing both to students who like to be on camera, or prefer to be behind the scenes.
“I think filming this episode is important because it’s a great way of bringing the spirit of Halloween into the Marist hallways, and showcases everyone in the Broadcasting Club’s talents and individual creativity through skits and costumes and whatever else they bring to the table,” said Curley.
Curley says the most fun thing about filming is being able to be with his friends, collaborate with other people, and see others’ ideas. He also appreciates the club moderator, Ms. Carlson.
“I think she’s the perfect person to take on this club. She’s taught us so much with her own experience. Even now we know how to get the equipment up and running,” he said.
The club, and opportunities to be involved with the show, are open to everyone.
“The club isn’t open for just one type of person. That’s the good thing about it. There are even athletes that do the Broadcasting Club,” he said.
Most episodes of the show, which airs on YouTube, are centered on a theme. The choice was obvious for the mid-October taping.
“We can be in costume and we can talk about a lot of Halloween activities that people enjoy, so it’s a relatable show that I think people will enjoy watching,” Carlson said.
The episode includes segments about students favorite costumes, a special interview with Mrs. Rademacher about improvements to the Arc, the sports analysts discussing games at Marist and other Chicago team updates, and a showcase for best students working in video production classes.
“The club allows students with an interest for either production, on camera performance, or producing to develop skills in a very professional-like atmosphere while also in an very entertaining setting,” Carlson said.
