The Marist football team faced off in their first competition of the year against the Morgan Park Mustangs last Saturday, August 31. The game resulted in a breathable 13-point win for the RedHawks.
Coach Fitzpatrick won his first game as the new head coach in the 29-16 win over the Mustangs. Marist’s offensive game plan seemed to stray away from the passing game and focused more on rushing. Nevertheless, senior quarterback Jacob Ritter still converted a few passing touchdowns, and one throwing two-point conversion.
Marist quickly took an early lead in the game, up 14-0 at one point. They kept the lead throughout the entire game, however it was still very competitive.
Senior running back John McCaullife, and Ritter together rushed for 138 yards. Ritter also had four passing touchdowns. Brendan Curran, senior kicker and wide receiver, converted on three extra points and one catching touchdown.
Marist defensive backs did their best to contain Morgan Park’s speedy wide receivers. The Marist defensive line seemingly trotted past Morgan Park offensive lineman all game, forcing numerous sacks and fumbles.
Morgan Park was still able to convert on a few big plays, offensively and defensively. The Mustang’s defense had one interception, and held Ritter’s passing game tight at times. Their offense also had two touchdowns, and a pair of two-point conversions.
