Marist’s brand new campus expansion has finally been utilized by Marist fall sports programs, most notably by our football team.
The Sportsplex became Marist property on Sept. 8, 2022. The football team began practicing here sometime around mid-August, a few months prior to the season.
Most of the facility is still being constructed. It is still lacking things such as air conditioning, which is expected to be completed this upcoming offseason. The facility will eventually include a football practice field, volleyball and basketball courts, a small softball field, and other smaller areas for things such as weightlifting and film.
Marist varsity football player Keegan Gaffney (Jr.) says, “It was incomplete, it wasn’t finished when I was there. I would rather practice on the outdoor field we have.”
One small, yet common concern is the commute to the Sportsplex, which may be out of the way for some players. On the other hand, Palos residents on the football team, such as Gaffney, may find it more convenient.
“It’s easier for me because it’s closer to my house, which is one personal benefit the Sportsplex has for me,” says Gaffney.
Despite it being unfinished, which causes some players to prefer the facilities at our main campus, the general consensus about the new property for Marist athletics is very positive.
“I’m excited to see what it will be like when it’s finished. It should really be fun,” says Varsity football cornerback, Cole Nolan (Jr.)
